From Where the Earth Beats... Musical Past, Present and Future

Abstract

In the Mexican musical environment, few methods of musical education integrate indigenous components as a central framework for learning, and fewer still recognize the potential of songs in indigenous languages –currently facing extinction– as a privileged means of revitalization as well as a demonstration of the fine kaleidoscope uniting musical past, present, and future. In response to this absence, my article focuses on the method of musical initiation presented in Desde donde late la tierra... Canciones en lenguas indígenas de México. El cancionero de Yolotli (From where the Earth Beats: Songs in Indigenous Languages ​​of Mexico, Yolotli’s Songbook, 2017), from its early stages to its publication and implementation as a contribution to musical education.
